He is not only the top player of his Era, but is quite possibly the best player to wear the uniform of a NBA team. He is the most recognizable athlete in the world and is believed to be the best there ever was, is, or ever will be. (NBA.com) A person to this magnitude has obviously a success, being able to have a family of his own and, knowing that there are thousands of people looking up to him, and being many people's idol. To be able to stand the pressure of being a national symbol of greatness, you have to have a driving force. Michael Jordan's family helped him to fight and become one of the most influential, successful, and professional sports figures ever. Body Michael Jeffrey Jordan was born on February 17, 1963, in Brooklyn, NY, to a proud Deloris and James Jordan. (Nba.com; BioLife.com) Now this very first point may seem like no big deal but it's something in itself. Jordan almost wasn't born. In 1963, when Deloris was carrying Mike her mother died unexpectedly causing her to fall into a deep depression and stress period. Fearing a miscarriage the family doctor ordered her to bed rest. (Greene 12; NBA.com) ?I Davis 3 always said that Michael's birth was like a sign. I lost my mother while I was carrying Michael, and he was my godsend. Michael was the happiness he sent me after a very sad time in my life.? ?Deloris (qtd. In Halberstam 48) ?The near miscarriage was very bad.? ?James (qtd. in Halberstam 49) Michael the Jordan's 4th child lived in a pretty much average house, which was on the lower end of the economic pool. When Mike was 2 he had a really close brush with death. James (Mike's father) was outside tuning up his car at his parents house. The ground was still soaked from the earlier downpour. Two extension cords let him stretch a lamp from the kitchen outlet to under the hood of his car. During his labor he saw something out of the corner of his eye. Mike had escaped his playpen and, was on his way to make it a father- son- project. James ran towards him bit it was too late. Mike walked right into the junction of the wires and began playing with them. A sudden surge of current sent him flying back about 3 feet, where he landed in too much shock to cry. (Greats of the Game.com; BioLife.com) James put a net up in the backyard and the boys played all the time. Michael's older brother Larry always beat him. Growing up Mike's favorite sport was baseball, and he was quite good too! He was the MVP of Dixie League and received a scholarship to Mickey Owen Baseball Camp. Michael got better at basketball and, decided to try out for the Varsity Laney High Basketball Team but, wasn't good enough as a sophomore. Jordan, as a sophomore, played on JV and, averaged 27.8 PPG. Jordan after junior year was Davis 4 invited to play at the 5-star Camp where colleges recruited. MJ won 10 trophies including 2 MVP's. The University of North Carolina recruited Jordan. Dean Smith the winningest coach in NCAA basketball history coached Mike. (Greene 52; Halberstam 27, BioLife.com) Most people thought that Mike would come and sit the bench. They were startled when they found out he was a season opener starter. (NBA.com) Mike had a great time playing for UNC, and his nest move was to become eligible for the NBA draft. Mike was 3rd pick behind Hakeem Olajuwon (Houston)

Free Essays on Analysis Of John L. Gaddis’ A Grand Strategy Of Transformation

A Grand Strategy of Transformation, written by John L. Gaddis, delves into George W. Bush’s report on national security and strategy, which was the first statement put forth from the Bush White House, and the first since the attacks that struck this country on September 11th. Going over the report with the reader Gaddis presents us with what the NSS says and what it fails to mention, goes into wether it can work, and what it all means. All the while, giving critical acclaim to Mr.Bush in creating the greatest strategy one would think America has ever seen in its entire life as a nation. First point Gaddis talks of is on Bush’s amazing equating skills, † The first innovation is Bush’s equation of terrorist with tyrants as sources of danger, an obvious outgrowth of September 11th.†(Gaddis 81) The second point Gaddis speaks of is Mr. Bush’s remarkable insight on the need to work together with others, †That gets us to another innovation in Bush’s Strategy, which is its emphasis on cooperation among the great powers.†(Gaddis 82) And the last innovation of Mr. Bush Gaddis remarks on is that,† The final innovation in the Bush Strategy deals with the longer term issue of removing the causes of terrorism and tyranny. Here, again, the president’s thinking parallels an emerging consensus within the academic community. For it’s becoming clear that poverty wasn’t what caused a group of middle-class and reasonable well-educated Middle Easterners to fly three airplanes into the buildings and another into the ground. It was, rather, resentment growing out of the absence of representative institutions in their own societies, so that the only outlet for political dissidence was religious fanaticism.†(Gaddis 82) Gaddis’ stance on Bush’s strategy was that it was brilliant and well thought out, not to mention supported by some of the best academic theories on politics today, ... Is the concept of global health useful as a way of conceptualizing Essay

Is the concept of global health useful as a way of conceptualizing contemporary health issues in world politics - Essay Example reats posed by anthrax, environmental damages, crime, human trafficking and terrorism, all come to mind when the term global health is used (Yoube, 2005). Governments and inter-governmental organizations have implemented global health policies and statements indicating that global health has emerged as an important foreign policy issue especially in relation to both national and international security (Labonte and Gagnon, 2010). It would therefore appear that the concept of global health is a useful way of conceptualizing contemporary health issues in world politics. However, Ruger (2008) argues that states have viewed contemporary global health issues as a threat to national security only insofar as it relates to the threat of biochemical weapons. Thus global health initiatives can be ramed in terms of orthodox international relations theory (Ruger, 2008). In this regard, global health is irrelevant as state rivalries take center stage. On the other hand, McInnes and Lee (2013) argue that applying a social constructivist analysis, the concept of global health is useful for conceptualizing contemporary health issues as these issues intricately tie the state to the market and forms an important part of the international political economy. It has also been argued that social constructivism more adequately reflects how states and international organizations view global health. From this perspective global heal th issues are viewed as intricately tied to other state interests that go beyond the potential of biochemical weapons (Forman, Cole, Ooms, and Zwarenstein, 2012). This research study analyses both sides of the argument. In particular this research study analyses whether or not the international relations theory of realism or social constructivism more adequately explain the concept of global health and as such whether or not these concepts of global health are useful for conceptualizing contemporary health issues. This paper is therefore divided into three

Creating Job Descriptions and Interview Questions Essay

Creating Job Descriptions and Interview Questions - Essay Example The HR Director would be the one who will oversee all HR related tasks within the organization as his decisions would be in line with how the organization views the entire dictum of recruiting, selecting, and eventually firing the employees. The HR Director would report to the top management about the steps that have been undertaken by the HR department and apprise them of the gradual and incremental shifts that have been coming about within the organization from time to time. He would also be reporting to the CEO of the company as regards to the fiscal measures and thus tell him how the company would meet its goals and objectives that are being seen through the eyes of the most prized resources within the organization, i.e. the employees themselves. The HR Director would also form up plans and later on execute them for best possible mileage of the organization. It would mean that the shortcomings with the HR domains are taken care of in a proactive way and the strengths are cashed u pon in an amiable manner as well. The HR Director would oversee the tasks of the HR manager and his team while finding solutions to keep them encouraged at all times (Sims, 2002). Overall, the HR Director will also play a significant role at liaising between the employees that are under his aegis, forming links of interaction and communication amongst them, and finding the reasons behind low employee morale. He will have a proactive eye on the falling standards of work conditions, and find a way to resolve the same. The HR Director will give his best within the HR domains on a regular basis and would be confident at all times. The HR Director would therefore play a very active role at forming serious links with the employees, and be present regularly at his office to set a personal example within the organization. 2. Create 10 questions that you can use to interview candidates for the position of HRM director at the company. The questions should include probes for additional informa tion and desired responses. 1. Are you at complete understanding with how the HR policies change because our organization is a proactive one and wants to move towards newer pastures with the passing times? Would you go an extra mile to learn something new, considering you are getting hired for the HR Director post? 2. Would you be able to work in the form of a team that achieves its objectives in accordance with the work realms of one another or are you someone who believes in one-man-show for the sake of displaying authority and control? What is the reason behind being one of the two? 3. How closely in touch are you with the technological facets and realms? Have you had any computer and IT courses of late that could make you a better choice for the post of HR Director at this organization? 4. This job requires you to visit outdoor locations and to travel far and wide. Are you open to such an offer because the hiring and selecting regimes require the aspirants to be interviewed firs t hand before the HR department decides to hire them or otherwise? 5. What would it take to make your mark on the organizational philosophy that has come about of age with the passage of time? Would you go out of your way to make sure that the organization is your top most priority in professional terms? 6. Would you be open to a salary cut if and when the need arises? In times of today, this is a serious undertaking on the part of the organization and you should be ready for it to happen

America Must Awake from the Nightmare of the Past to the Light of a New

America Must Awake from the Nightmare of the Past to the Light of a New Day Nostalgia is America's fatal disease. We love to "go back," to talk of the good old days, to wish we could return to an era forever gone. This rhetoric that warms our hearts, though, is, ironically, the impetus for our national self-destruction. Nostalgia valorizes a past that never was, casts a dark shadow of distortion across the present, and prevents us from projecting a viable, sincere vision of a better future. When we, as a nation, say we want to go back to a time past, that's very often what happens, for such talk sends us into a regressive downward spiral that prevents critical social progress in America. The American political scene is shot through with the rhetoric of nostalgia. A growing movement in the United States, led by conservative and neoconservative politicians, scholars and spokespeople, heralds a return to an America they believe has died in the tumult of recent social change. This America, they say, was one where we all worked hard and took care of our own. It was a harmonious place where everyone, from presidents to janitors, shared common values on community, family, government, and life. We need the American Dream back, the rhetoric goes. Way back when, with some elbow grease and a little ingenuity, everyone could have a house in the suburbs and a new white dress for their daughter on Easter Sunday. Enough of this social chaos, where everyone complains about everything, and they're all looking for a free handout from the government. We need to go back to when things were right_to when fair was fair, everyone believed in the family, and people had their heads on straight. Sounds nice, doesn't it?! ... ...edom_beyond that which any peoples have ever before experienced. This chaos is difficult and always challenging, and leaves us with nothing to hold onto. The answer to these challenges, though, is not to turn in this chaos for a new white dress and a home in the suburbs. Rather, we must create a new color of virtue, find a new place of hope. We need not out of fear go back to our past, as American nostalgia tells us to. We must shed our fears and strive for a new order, one forged in chaos and grounded in freedom. New cultural and political norms, on structures from family to government, are waiting to be born, and it is our job to create and nurture them. It is time to lay our fear of the unknown aside and jump headlong into the darkness of the future. Only then can we hope to someday awake from the nightmare of the past to the light of a new day.

Internet Gaming Addiction Essay

Computer games are software which developed with an interesting plot, amazing graphics and unreal concepts which you may only see in those games, fantasy movies or animated movies. There are many types of computer games. There are some games that are really addictive making players unhappy if they were offered just a nick of time for playing. Some computer games drive and put the player at the highest level of eagerness to finish the game and wait for the next version. These games are addicting for only a short period of time, and stops after finishing it. The bad thing here is when the player starts to look for another game similar to his previous game. This surely is a sign of addiction. These computer games have characteristics that may or may not be experienced in real life. The difference of these games from the real world is that it makes the user do virtual things that people don’t do in real life. These games are designed to entertain people and one of its objectives is to make people hooked to it. If there are more people hooked, then the producers of the games get more profit. How did these games appeal to the people? Some games may not have done its objective but there are some that greatly caught the attention and time of the people who played it. Another thing is that these games offer competition. It is the same competition that we experience in real life. If the player performs well over the other players in the game, he feels satisfaction. In order to stand among the rest, a player needs to play hard or devote more time. It is just like when we want to standout in class, we have to study harder or when we like to be the most outstanding player in our favorite sports, we have to practice more. A person gets satisfaction after achieving something that he or she wants. This achievement is easy to acquire in computer games as compared to real life. You just sit down, run the game, and enjoy yourself while achieving your goals. However, computer games are far from our real world. You may relate to them, but the real thing is really different. Sometimes, the things that happen to your character in a role playing game may resemble the exact opposite of what is happening to yourself. When your character in the game gets richer, it does not follow that it could happen to the real you. Actually, it does the other thing – you become poorer. Getting addicted to these computer games may be enjoyable but there are serious consequences. Addiction always leads to negative effects. It renders a person irresponsible and makes him forget more important things he should do, and worse, people who are close to him. Sometimes life itself could be just thrown away like a disposable item. A South Korean man was reported dead after playing online game continuously. The death was caused by heart failure due to exhaustion, lack of sleep, and not eating enough (BBC News, 2005). Not sleeping or lack of sleep leads to failure or weakens the capability of our body to resist sickness. And gamers always force themselves to play up to the point that they even lose the time for sleeping. If normal people who lack sleep do not feel good sometimes, then this fact also applies to the gamers. Playing computer games is not for free. It uses electricity, some needs Internet connection, and sometimes you have to pay the game servers to play their online game. Living our daily lives is not for free either. We need resources to support our needs. We need to work to earn resources. Lucky are those teenagers supported by their parents. And obviously those parents will not support for addiction to computer games. It is also a reality that we may earn money from playing games because there are things in a computer game especially in online games that can be traded off with real money. But this money is not enough to support our needs. Addiction to computer games, generally, will not do good effects to the people. If you want to play computer games, you can play them. But be sure to remember not to fall on its trap on becoming addict to it. It has never been good to be an addict on computer games or anything. The only problem is, sometimes, you tend to ignore things because it is being blocked by something attractive or enjoyable. Being responsible is the key to avoid addiction. You better think of yourself, your family and your future. Do not let yourself get entangled in the roots of addiction. You should balance all the things that you do. Do not forget to be happy or do necessary things for your own life. You should know and set priorities in life. You should ask yourself what is important. Think critically, responsibly and do not stop with that. Whatever might be the result of that thinking, carry that on. Just plant in your mind that being an addict to whatever is not good.
